Do I really need to prepare my roof for the winter?

Many assume that because they live in warmer climate or regions where snow never falls, there’s no need to fret about roof repairs.  This couldn’t be farther from the truth.  It happens each year, all across the globe.  Record breaking temperatures and unexpected snowstorms.  The only way to be prepared is to well…prepare.  Here’s how you can winterize your roof.

Complete an inspection

You may be able to diagnose leaky roofs or visible damage yourself, but there are certain things to look for that may go unnoticed to the untrained eye.  A qualified Atlanta roofing company will know just what to look for and has the proper tools to complete a thorough assessment.  Any holes should be repaired immediately as they will only widen, as the weather conditions get harsher.

Beware of the Ice Dam

Ice dams occur on the slopes of the roof where water drips to the edge then freezes to form ice structures.  As a child, it may have been fun to play with those icicles but if left to form, you could end up with damaged shingles and interior leaks!  A long-term fix would be to check and repair any issues with your attic ventilation.  Ice dams form where heat is escaping from your roof, melting the snow.

Clean, Clean, Clean

Keeping your roof free of debris is one of the most cost efficient ways to prevent roof damage in the winter.  (Sorry, cleaning your gutters doesn’t stop when fall ends.)  Your gutters need to be able to direct water accordingly, which will also prevent ice dams.  Flat roofs require more maintenance, as they tend to collect water and snow.  Pitched roofs are able to better direct unwanted water/debris but should be monitored just the same.  It’s also a good idea to remove any branches that are hanging over your roof as cold weather weakens trees as well.
